HA2 - Task 2 - Game Evaluation

MEKKA HORNET REVIEW AND EVALUATION

Genre

This game is a Top Down Shooter with aspect of futuristic technology and Sci-fi. I think this because the "Mekka Hornet" seems to include features that indicate more mechanical features which seems a lot more futuristic. The game is presented in a retro style and it includes a lot of action features as there are bullets and explosions within the game.

Gut Reaction

In my opinion, I think that the game was pretty good overall but the game did consist of a few technical and audio glitches. The gameplay looked very clean and the game was also very fun to play with a fairly difficult challenge. I personally found parts a bit too difficult considering that I easily beat the boss but it took me a while to get through the actual level. To improve this, I would either lower the difficult or make it so that the boss shoots faster or is harder to defeat. The enemy movements were very unique and the gameplay was consistent as the mechanics made the enemies either rush at you or stay still and shoot at you, and another cool feature is that you didn't actually have to shoot to progress in the level as the mobs dissapeared automatically after a certain time period. I thought the art of the game was well created as the textures were well detailed and the colours were bright and vibrant.

Content

The content that was included in the game was overall pretty good and very catchy. I think that the theme went along pretty well with the type of game as it was more of an upbeat tune that gets you pumped to play the game and it generally just sounds good. I think that the graphics in the game such as the spirites and backgrounds were designed very well as they were very detailed and textured. The starting screen was very plain and simple but it had an eye catching title and font that looked great and I think that it adds another aspect to the game.

Construction

In this game, I think that the mechanics were rather stiff and hard to move as it seem that the more you held on to a moving key, the more you would progress and accelerate. This made it harder to control the character as it was hard to predict where and when it would stop which made the game more fun and challenging to play. I liked how there were multiple ways that you could die as just simply crashing into an enemy would do over half of your health and then health drops are not very rare which means that dodging and weaving is an essential skill that you need to progress to higher stages in the game. The art and animations looked pretty nice but slightly choppy due to the characters only having 2 frames. I love how the bare left and right animations looked as it gave off a 3d vibe and aspect which gave the game an overall pretty good look.

Target Audience

I think that this game is aimed toward people that are 13+ as it consists of a small amount of violence and it is a top down shooter game which means that little kids will most likely not be able to play it. I also think that this game would be quite difficult to play as it tends to be more difficult for little people to come up with strategies to get through the level.
